A great event starts before anyone takes the stage.
Choosing a speaker is only part of the job. You also need someone who understands your event, communicates clearly, meets deadlines, and makes your job easier.
David works with you before the event to understand your audience, your goals, and the conversations you want the program to make possible.
The conversation begins before David takes the stage.
“David is a pleasure to work with. He’s very professional, of course, but he also makes an effort to understand and support your project and goals. You feel like he’s on your team.”

Please read as written
We admire people who are strong. They handle problems, persevere through difficulty, and keep going when others might give up.
But what happens when those same qualities make it harder for someone to say, “I need help”?
There was a time in our speaker’s life when he was struggling—and didn’t feel safe letting anyone know. That experience changed the way he thinks about strength, connection, and the conversations we make possible for the people around us.
Today, David P. Otey draws on research, lived experience, and a career spent helping people communicate more effectively to explore what strength can look like when we define it more broadly.
Please welcome the founder of Speaking of Mental Health and creator of Redefining Strength, David P. Otey.

Long Bio — 150 words
David P. Otey, MA, MBA, is a keynote speaker who helps organizations rethink what strength looks like at work—and create cultures where people are better prepared to have conversations that matter. Drawing on research, lived experience, and a career spent helping people communicate more effectively, David brings warmth, humor, and humanity to a subject that can be difficult to discuss.
Before becoming a professional speaker, David worked in broadcast engineering and led a nationwide initiative that trained more than 10,000 television news professionals on new technology. That experience sparked a lasting curiosity about why some messages connect while others don’t. Today, his keynote, Redefining Strength, explores how traditional ideas about resilience and self-reliance can sometimes make it harder to ask for help—and how connection can change that.
David holds master’s degrees in communication and business administration and is founder of Speaking of Mental Health, LLC.
